All chatters must abide by the rules set forth in Tower Law.
(However, we are not responsible for the content you may view on the chat rooms. If you take issue with something, please bring it to the attention of a channel operator or Tower Officer – also see Rules)
–> You can just start chatting now via web-based IRC
Our chat rooms are hosted on the blackcobalt.net Internet Relay Chat (IRC) network.
We sponsor our own IRC server on blackcobalt.
As of this writing, blackcobalt also supplies the following client servers (port 6667, SSL encrypted clients are accepted on port 6669):
Alternately, you can use irc.blackcobalt.net to choose a random server.
IRC is a very flexible, powerful, and easy to use chat protocol. (For more detailed information on IRC, you can try visiting blackcobalt's documentation)
You can access IRC via either a client application installed on your system or browser-based solutions.
Installing a real IRC client is highly recommended if at all possible – they provide significantly more functionality than most browser-based web clients. Information on clients for most operating systems is available below.
mIRC is the most popular IRC client for Windows.
Download, install, and run mIRC.
A window titled mIRC Options will appear (you can also select Options from the File menu)
Enter your information (full name and email address do not have to be accurate information) and preferred nickname.
Select Servers from the left-hand menu.
Click Add
Add a server with the following details:
Click Add and select Connect from the left-hand menu again. Click Connect and enter #WhiteTower in the mIRC Channels dialog when it appears.
XChat is a highly functional and very slick IRC client usable on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X systems.
Simply add a network named Blackcobalt to the Network List, edit Blackcobalt, pick a server from the top of this page (or use irc.netlandtowers.com), and add it to that network.
Colloquy is a very well designed Mac OS X IRC client, also available on the iPhone.
For quick chatting, web-based IRC is the easiest solution.
This is a simple JavaScript client that should work anywhere JavaScript is enabled.
This may not work if you're behind a restrictive firewall – in which case, try Mibbit. See below.
Mibbit provides a somewhat more advanced web browser-based client, available via mibbit.com
Click Start chatting now
Click the link labelled Server to reveal the server address field and enter irc.netlandtowers.com (or pick from the server list above)
Enter your preferred nickname. You'll probably also want to specify #WhiteTower as the channel (or you can use /join #whitetower after connecting).
If you are behind a firewall that is blocking high ports, Mibbit is your best bet for a successful connection.
Chat online on #WhiteTower (via web-based chat)
#WhiteTower is our Out of Character (OOC) chat channel, where we discuss anything and everything. Most of the “social” side of the Tower community takes place here – come introduce yourself!
Chat online on #GholamInn (via web-based chat)
#GholamInn is used for live action role playing (no OOC chatter, please!). Chat logs are later cleaned, reformatted, and posted as RP in order to gain points.
Formatting of logs, recorded by the bot fate, is done automatically on the hour. The formatted logs are available from http://eris.oppresses.us/~bots/logs – be sure to read README.FIRST.
(It is recommended that all players also maintain their own logs, just in case.)
For special events or “overflow” RP from the Inn, from time to time we also have live RP in #WatchersHall.
Please be courteous & considerate of others and respect the channel operators (indicated in most IRC clients by a @ prefix)
The current active channel operator list is: Syr Jascha Raly Mathias
For the sake of uninterrupted play, please try to keep out-of-character (OOC) chatter in #GholamInn to a minimum.
We'd be happy to help you! Tell us about it on the OOC Message Board
Sometimes it's not possible to connect from school or work networks due to firewall rules. In these cases, you may want to try using Mibbit.
Issues relating to server abuse, server bans, nickname or channel disputes, or similar server-specific problems that cannot be addressed by channel operators can be directed to irc@oppresses.us
