Overview
What is the Points System? Why was it created?
The Points system is a quantifiable measure of a character's experience and skill level.
It exists because the Netland Towers Community has gotten quite large. It was growing difficult
to be familiar with each character's strengths and weaknesses. With the Points System, we hope
that by putting numbers to some of these previously self-described skills it will be easier to differentiate between a character who has
earned his or her strength and a character who is pretending strength. Under this system it
is difficult (rather impossible, really) for a new character to be a powerhouse. We hope that that
Points system will help curtail "GodModing," in which a new player begins their character with
a high level of skill and power. Such GMing, as it is called, often halts the fun because if the
character is a Novice who can do anything, why is she a Novice? It often becomes difficult for others
to play with such a character. Also, many who start out GodModing become bored because things are
too easy, or they change their ways and later wonder why they chose to be super-powered in the first place.
Tables
Go to the Tables
These are charts listing the Skill Names and abilities at each point level. The Skill Types are: Channelling, Combat, Entertaining, Thievery, Politics, Commonry.
Each Skill Type has a number of Skills attatched to it. For example, the "Channelling" Skill Type contains these skills: Air, Earth, Fire, Spirit, Water. A channelling
character takes Points in each of these Skills. For example, "Example the Aes Sedai" might have the following skills:
Example Aes Sedai
(700 points total)
Channelling - Air - 100
Channelling - Fire - 50
Channelling - Spirit - 120
Channelling - Water - 100
Politics - Leadership - 100
Politics - Deception - 110
Commonry - Practical Education - Basic - 120
Note that Channelling - Earth is not listed. Example Aes Sedai cannot use the Power "Earth." This will affect her when it comes to using Weaves, which are a second-level table. Second-level table means
that it is a subset of a Skill or Skill Type. The Skill Type "Commonry" for example has the Skill "Practical Education" as seen in the above example.
"Basic Education" is on the second-level table of "Practical Education," and includes the "3 Rs." Also on the table is "Advanced Education" which includes geography and history on either a local or global level. There is also an "Advanced:Specify" category to fill in specific needs.
Each character may have a maximum of 15 skills. Choose with care.
Earning Points
Go to the Chart
The chart found here lists all the ways to gain points and how many points each item on the list will earn.
The way to earn points is to RP. Keep track of how much each of your posts is worth.
Requirements and Restrictions
Go to the List
Each of the Guilds has a slightly different set of requirements, but all must accrue the same total
number of points. This is meant to reflect the different skills valued and needed by these different
types of characters. Note that what is presented here are the minimum number of points required.
Each rank allows a maximum as well, and players are encouraged to go beyond the minimums if they wish, even
to assign points not required in (and not forbidden by) the character's Guild.
Assigning Points
Go to the Form
This is the form you fill out once you have RPed and racked up some points. It is a good idea to fill this form out weekly or so, depending on how often you RP. Remember, it is the Player's responsibility to keep his listing up-to-date. Each character may have a maximum of 15 skills.
