Frequently Asked Questions

1.1 What is netlandtowers.com?
Netland Towers, or NT (sometimes NWT) as we lazy folks around here call it, is a website created by fans of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. It is an unofficial fanclub created to role-play various character types in the world Robert Jordan has created. We also have discussions about the books and the various plotlines in them. The website also has a chatroom where you can meet other members and make friendships. Some aspects of the site are influenced by The Wheel of Time Roleplaying Game.

1.2 How did it start?
Originally it was called the Netland White Tower and consisted of Aes Sedai and Warders. Over time it grew, went through a few changes here and there, and it's now grown to be NetlandTowers.com.

1.3 Who runs it?
NetlandTowers.com is owned by its members, in the (RL) name of Brevalin Sedai. The Amyrlin Seat, Jascha Sedai, and the Keeper of the Chronicles, Brevalin Sedai, run it.

1.4 How often is it updated?
The site is updated constantly as needed. Please keep in mind though there are real people with real lives behind all the characters here. They will update as soon as their lives permit them to. Generally speaking, most updates are weekly.

1.5 Who are the Tower Officers and what do they do?
The Tower Officers are people that have been asked and agree to give a little extra time out of their lives to keep this place up and actively running. Each guild has its own leader with the Amyrlin Seat and the Keeper of the Chronicles in the top seat. Other officers are: Librarian, Registrars, Points Coordinator, Guild Leaders, and Mentors. See a full listing of all Site Officers, their duties and their email addresses
here.

1.6 What is role-playing?
Roleplaying is exactly what the name implies. Players take on the role of a character, and play out that character's words and behaviors. The media we use here for this purpose are Message Boards, email, and the chat room. On the Message Boards, you are telling your character's part of a story. That mixes with the stories of other characters to create the role-play. Usually it's the same for email. In the chat room exchanges are quicker, more dialogue based, though many a spar has been played there.

1.7 What is the point system about?
Click here for all you need to know about Points.

2.1 Whom do I send my email to?
Depending on the email subject send it to the
Tower Officer that it applies to. Keep in mind that these people have lives that sometimes delay their response time on emails. If your email concerns Guild Matters, send it to the head of your Guild. If your email is about joining, send it to the Registrar. If your email is about site navigation, email the Keeper. If your email is about site policy, email the Amyrlin. If you do not receive a response from your email within a week or so, please send it again and also email the Amyrlin. If no response comes, then ask around to make sure the person you are mailing to isn't on vacation.

2.2 How do I submit work or a revision to the Tower Library?
Please follow the Guidelines for Submission located
here.

2.3 How do I update my member listing?
See the
Updates Section for submitting any new details you have such as bondings, new email, errors in spelling, and so forth. Remember, it is your responsibility to keep your listing current.

2.4 How do I report an error?
Contact the
Keeper or Amyrlin.

2.5 Who can help me with my problem?
It depends on the problem, but generally speaking you could go to any
Officer. That's what they're there for. Any OOC question can and should be directed to an Officer. Use common sense for which, and if none seem to fit you can ask anyone, even the Amyrlin Seat. TOs aren't there just for bragging rights, they're there to help. They understand the site and the rules, and are there for you.

2.6 What is a Mentor? How do I get one?
A Mentor is assigned to a new player upon submission of a biography. This Mentor's goal is to help the new player understand rules (written and unwritten) and adjust to the community. They are also to help new members with both the content and style of their entrance writing. Your Mentor should contact you when you submit your bio.

3.1 What are the rules for my behavior?
Rules for Member (or Player) Behavior include reading this entire FAQ. Members must read
Tower Law as well, and review the policies from time to time.

3.2 What happens if I break them?
Consequences are listed in the
Tower Law.

3.3 What are the rules for my character's behavior?
Rules for character behavior are based on customs, traditions and laws in the series. They are further defined at each
Guild page.

3.4 What happens if s/he breaks them and how is that determined?
Planned breaking of Character rules should be discussed ahead of time with the Guild Leader or the Amyrlin Seat. Appropriate resulting sanctions should be agreed on and implemented. Example: A Novice runs away. The player has already discussed this with the Mistress of Novices. When the character is dragged back to the Tower, she is punished by three weeks (real time) of chores, and one extra class before she can request Raising.

Unplanned breaking of Character rules should be reported to the proper Guild Leader ASAP, so that in-character sanctions can be discussed and implemented, or the errant post changed.

3.5 What is GodModing?
GodModing, or GMing, is playing a character as having exceptional skills, abilities, and strengths. It is also playing characters with skill that have no basis in the world of "Randland." Examples: telepathy, guns, inhuman speed, etc. If it has not been done in the books, it is not done. There is no Healing of Death.
To quote Robert Jordan in the Foreword of the Wheel of Time Roleplaying Game: "An invincible character that walks around killing everything in sight gets boring after a while. When you can do anything, take anything, with no possible consequences, the challenge goes away. And so does the fun, except for a few who no doubt are destined to be junk-bond brokers, used car salesmen, or worse, politicians."

3.6 Can I have more than one character?
Yes. As per Tower Law, you may as many characters as you can keep active, up to the database limit of 5. Please do not start a character unless you are sure you will be able to keep him or her active, as it is a lot of work for the Registrars.

3.7 I don't like my Mentor, s/he's not as helpful to me as another person might be. What can I do?
First talk with your Mentor about it. Be polite and honest and you should receive the same in return. If you can't come to an agreement on something, ask to be placed with another Mentor. One should contact you within a few days. If your Mentor has gone missing, contact the
Amyrlin Seat.

4.1 Do I have to pay to play?
No. If you have been a member for a little while and would like to contribute to the site, a donation page has been set up
here. All monies collected will go toward paying for the domains and hosting. No person connected to the Tower benefits from these donations. Brevalin Sedai, the Keeper of the Chronicles, pays for all upkeep not covered by the donations, and any funds raised above the costs may be used to reimburse her.

4.2 What should my username be?
Your username can be whatever you like. Your real name, the name of your main character, whatever you please. It must be unique, as it is how you will be listed at the site and should be your main (or only)
Message Board account. It will also most likely be how you are addressed in the Chat Room.

4.3 How do I join?
By following the steps at the join page
here.

4.4 How should my character biography be done?
Your character biography, or "bio" as it's usually called, should be written as a story, not just a listing of statistics. It should incorporate as much detail as you can provide about your character, as it will be a reference for those playing with you. You may write it in first or third person. If you are still unsure, browse the bios of some members for inspiration.

4.5 Is admission to the NWT selective?
Not really. Players need to have a bio that is error free and at least a page long, about a believable character. All players must have a valid email address.

4.6 Can I join as a character in one of Robert Jordan's books?
NO, this is copyright infringement and we cannot accept it. You may reference Robert Jordan characters in your bio but you may not use them as characters in your biography or play them in any NT media.

4.7 What are the Guilds I can join?
The Guilds currently consist of: Aes Sedai, Warders, Asha'man, Whitecloaks, Aiel, and a "catchall" known as Commoners. Fully a part of the site, but not exactly a guild like the others, is the
Darkfriend Guild. You may designate a character as a Darkfriend when you create it, and you will be contacted by the Darkfriend Coordinator. Characters who become Darkfriends later should email Jebol Modin, Darkfriend Coordinator.

4.8 Why can't my character have certain Talents or skills?
In order to keep a 'realistic' balance (realistic being relative to the World), there are limitations on how many characters may have certain Talents. For example, until Egwene, the Tower had not seen a Dreamer in several hundred years. As players and characters come and go the list of "not available" Talents and skills may change. Special skills and Talents must be developed by RP and cannot be taken at character generation.

4.9 Why can't I jump in and play an advanced character?
To keep a consistent level of writing and role-playing, new members are required to start a character at entry-level ranks. Once a character has been raised through the ranks of their guild, the member may create any new characters at any playable rank (within the 5 characters per member database limit). Playing "positioned" characters (i.e. characters that serve a specific function within an organization) is allowed at the discretion of the Guild Leader/s and the Amyrlin Seat. Characters are still encouraged to go through the growth stages of first and second ranks. Characters starting at Second Rank begin with 350 points, Third Rank with 700 points. All Guild Requirements must be met.

5.1 What is expected of a member?
Members are expected to maintain a certain level of activity - teach a class or host or play in a RP at least once in a four-month period. They are expected to have read this FAQ and
Tower Law, and maintain a valid email address. Players are responsible for keeping their membership information current, and for conducting themselves with basic human decency on the Message Boards and other forms of communication around the site. This is more formally written at the Law.

5.2 Where can I check on the rules?
The rules, also called Tower (or Site) Law, are listed
here. Access them later by clicking the "Information: Tower Law" pulldown link found on every page.

5.3 How do I raise through the ranks?
The raising requirements can be found
here. Please keep in mind that these are only minimums, you are encouraged to go further and do more. Character development never ends, at any rank.

5.4 How do I become an officer?
When an office becomes vacant, the Amyrlin and Keeper will post on the MB requesting applications. Requirements and Qualifications will be mentioned. See
here.

5.6 I'm bored. What can I do to spice things up?
RP! Stop by the chat rooms. Nothing to RP? Sure there is: get in trouble, get out of trouble, find something, write to someone, move some furniture, ask for a chore, be assigned to Tarwin's Gap, challenge a superior or just wander around and end with TBCB: anyone. That means however you end your post, anyone can come play with you. If you need more ideas, email
the Amyrlin.

6.1 What is the timeline?
It fluctuates and each character ages differently. All known Forsaken are dead (to avoid the copyright troubles of RPing them), but Tarmon Gai'don has not yet been fought. Egwene al'Vere is presumed to have made the White Tower whole again (and had some malady befall her). The Black and White Towers are still not good friends, but there are some lines of communication between them - for example Healers at the Black Tower are permitted to come to the White for study. The Red Ajah has returned with the failure of the Violet Ajah. The Red's new purpose is hunting down and bringing to justice or training all rogue channellers.

6.2 How do I interact with the different Guilds?
You can interact with members of other Guilds freely on any MB or the CR, provided you meet any rank requirements of your own Guild in regards to moving around the world. Aside from things like droves of Whitecloaks boldly walking the streets of Tar Valon, we actively encourage inter-guild RP.

6.3 Can I change Guilds?
A well-supported RP history is needed to change Guilds, along with the permissions of the relevant Guild Leaders, or the Amyrlin and Keeper if the GLs cannot both agree.

6.4 Is there a limit on how many points my Character can earn?
There is no limit for the number of points a top-rank character (Aes Sedai, Veteran, etc) may earn.
First-rank characters (Soldiers, Manshima, etc) have a points cap of 550. They may not take more than 700 points - this is to reflect the limit to the amount of learning they could achieve at that level.
Second-rank characters (Journeyman, Hundredman, etc) have a points cap of 1200.
Characters are not required to move up in rank even though their points limit has been reached.

6.5 Is there a cap on Channelling points?
Yes. Strength in the One Power is finite, and different for each character. Most characters attain their full strength by the time they reach the Shawl or Dragon pin, but you have until you reach 1200 points to make any last adjustments to your OP strength. Example: Suzy Sedai was raised to the Blue Ajah with a point total of 825. When she hits 1200, she can add no more to her channelling skills.

6.6 Why am I limited to 5 characters?
Alas, that is how the database is setup. While future changes to the site may enable a member to have more characters, the current database limits each member to 5 characters.

6.7 Why am I limited to 15 skills?
Again this is a function of the current database setup. While future changes may come, for now each character is limited to 15 skills.

7.1 How do I find a specific member?
Use the search on the main page or look through the individual guild listings. You may also search members and posts on the Message Boards.

7.2 What are the Message Boards and what are their rules?
The
message boards are our main medium for communication and RP. You should check them as often as possible; many people check them daily, and many several times a day. Do not be afraid if you cannot make such a commitment, if you have only a few hours a week online you can still play. The rules can be found here.

7.3 What about Message Board Etiquette?
Etiquette, or expected conduct, on the MBs starts much the same as anywhere: be courteous and polite. From there it expands to take in the
rules. Don't "flame" someone - launch a personal attack. Do not post uninvited on a thread marked TBC by a name. When in doubt, ask someone!

7.4 What are the abbreviations and what do they mean?
The comprehensive list of abbreviations can be found here.

7.5 How do I get people to RP with me?
Post! It's the quickest and easiest way. Leave an opening at the end for someone to reply. Or if you have something specific in mind you could email or PM someone you think would fit and work out the details with them.

7.6 Where do I hold a RP?
Most RP is done on the IC MBs or in the IC CR. From time to time someone will create and host a RP of a specific event or time. This will be held in the RP section of the MBs. The way to get such a slot is to email the
Keeper of the Chronicles with the specifics, including who may participate and what the title will be, or better yet, just fill out the form!

7.7 How do I chat?
For a full explanation of chatting look
here.

7.8 Whom may I RP with?
You may RP with whomever you wish. However, some guilds have IC restrictions on which character types lower ranks may interact with (for example Novices are not to interact with Asha'man of any rank, Accepted may do so only when well supervised). These designations are strictly IC - you may break them. If you do, though, you must be prepared for your character to be assigned punishments. It may happen, it may not, but it can, and you must play the consequences also.

8.1 Where are the Message Boards I keep hearing about?
The Message Boards can be found
here. They are accessible from several points on the site, including the community common area.

8.2 There sure are a lot of boards! Where does my post go?
Most MBs are fairly self-explanatory. If you have a post that is about Out of Character issues, it goes on the OOC Board. IC posts go on the appropriate IC board. For example, Novices should be posting only on MBs which are at the White Tower. Posts for a specific RP should go on the RP Board set up for that purpose.

8.3 How do I create a new board?
New boards should only be for formal RPs (RPs with a specific storyline which will need a lot of dedicated post space). To acquire such a board, email or PM the Keeper with a description of your RP, or just
fill out the form.

8.4 Whom do I go to with a Message Board problem?
First go to the Moderator for your particular board. If they cannot help, go to the Amyrlin or Keeper, who are Moderators on all boards.

9.1 What are the restricted Skills?
The following skills are presently restricted: Wolfkin, Dreamer, Dreamwalker, Treesinger, *Angreal Maker, Reading Residues, Foretelling, Sniffing, Unravelling Weaves, Making Cuendillar. From time to time, they may be closed off entirely, or other skills added to the list. The following skills are presently forbidden: Viewing (Min's ability), Old Blood.

9.2 How can I get in?
Contact your Mentor if you wish to have a special restricted skill. If your Mentor feels you RP adequately within the standards of the site, the Mentor will apply to the officers on your behalf. The officers will vote over the course of one (1) week. If either the Mentor or the Officers have reservations, these will be discussed with the player. You may apply once per rank if you are denied the first time. You may only apply three (3) times with any character, but you may apply with other characters in the future.
A player may have only one (1) character with a special skill; this character may have only one (1) special.
