Rules on Chatting - Please read the rules before beginning!
(updated 2/11/07)
IRC Network
The IRC (internet relay chat) network that we use is irc.oppresses.us
Our channels are:
#WhiteTower - Out of Character
#GholamInn - In Character
To use IRC and visit our channels (or CRs), you need an IRC client, such as mIRC for Windows users, or IRCle for MacOS users. If you cannot download one of these programs, you have the option of using Java.
See the guidelines below on connecting with mIRC. Further IRC client help available here.
| Getting Connected and Chatting |
Once you have downloaded mIRC or IRCle, you need to get on the right server. There are several different ones you can choose from depending on your location.
type /server irc.oppresses.us
Once you connect to a server, you can join one of the multiple channels (CRs), on the network. #WhiteTower is the NT OOC channel. #GholamInn is the main NT IC channel. To join, you need to use the /join command followed by either #WhiteTower or #GholamInn.
#help is, handily, the help channel. If you need help with IRC commands and no one in the CR can help you out, you can go there and ask nicely for some help.
CR ops are around to keep the peace, not infringe on your fun. Respect their authority, please. If they ask you to do something, (tone down offensive language, change conversation) just do it.
The channel founder is Jascha. She reserves the right to ban any user who is abusing the privilege of using the CR. If you have a problem with one of the ops, contact Jendaia: amyrlin@netlandwhitetower.com. Include a log if you are able. The current CR ops are:
- #WhiteTower: Jascha
- #GholamInn: Jascha
Don't ask for ops.
/ghost: If you are disconnected from IRC and
your nick is still being used when you reconnect, if your nick is registered,
you may use the /ghost command to get rid of the "ghost" of yourself.
Type: /ghost nick password
Where nick is the nickname you are getting rid of and password is your password.
/join: So you can join a channel in addition
to #whitetower without having to use the Perform list. Also, it's nice when
you accidentally close the #whitetower chat window and want to get back in!
Type: /join #channelname
Where #channelname is the name of the channel you wish to join.
/me: This is how you do the nifty 'actions'.
Typing: /me is really dang cute!
Will result in: * YourNick is really dang cute!
/nick: Wish to change your nickname? This is
how.
Typing: /nick OogaBooga
Will change your Nick to OogaBooga. Please use a better nick than OogaBooga
though!
/part: This command can be used to leave a
chat channel without closing disconnecting from IRC.
Typing: /part #whitetower Back in a bit!
Will result in that channel window closing on your screen and will inform
chatters in the channel #whitetower that you will be "Back in a bit!"
Private Messages (PC)
Private Messages are messages seen only by you and the person you are "PCing"
with. If you were standing in a crowded room, a "Private Message" would be
like whispering in someone's ear.
When using mIRC, there are two methods of private messaging people.
Type: /msg recipient message
So: /msg SoullessGoat You are really cool!
Would send SoullessGoat the message: You are really cool!
Alternatively, double clicking on the recipient's name should open up a private
window that you can use to chat to them normally.
/quit: Using this command will log you off
of the IRC server and out of any chat channels you are in.
Typing: /quit Gotta go! Work calls!
Will return the text: *** You has left IRC(Quit: Gotta go! Work calls!)
And will log you off of the IRC server.
/whois: This is used to get some simple information
about a chatter.
Typing: /whois SoullessGoat
Will return the person's U@H, their "Real Name", the channels they are active
in, what server they're connected on.
The commands above are just some very basic commands
a person needs to know to play with IRC. This is by no means the end of the
list of features and commands. Every IRC server has different options and
commands. For those interested in learning more about IRC and what a person
can do with IRC, please type the following text while you are logged into
an IRC channel:
/msg Nickserv help
/msg Chanserv help
NickServ and ChanServ are the "programs" which control User and Channel options.
Their help files are extensive and can teach you anything you need to know.
Alternatively, for general IRC usage concerns, just
logging into the channel and asking questions is acceptable. Don't be afraid
to ask questions. Anyone there would likely be more than happy to help as
they can and, we've all been there before. Everyone on IRC starts out as
a "Newbie".
| Getting Into the Chat Room Using mIRC |
by the Soulless Goat
Though there are several IRC Clients out there, mIRC is the most popular. It is
created for Windows computers. If you use a Mac, you'll need to go get
IRCle. Since I don't have a Mac computer,
I can't help you as far as configuring IRCle goes. If you are using a Windows
computer, however, follow the steps below to get yourself into the CR in under
ten minutes.
- Download mIRC by clicking
the link and choosing a site to download from.
- When asked where to save the file to, choose to save it to your
Desktop so you can get to it easily.
- When it's done downloading, double click on the file on your desktop.
- Follow the prompts, then click on Install.
- mIRC will automatically put an icon on your desktop whether you like it
or not. So go ahead and double click on it to start up your mIRC program.
- Immediately a Splash Screen will pop up that has a picture of the
geeky-looking guy that programmed mIRC. Just close this window. Screen Shot
- A window titled mIRC Options will appear. If it doesn't, select
Options from the File menu. Screen Shot
- On the left-hand side of the Options window is a menu. Make sure the
Connect option is highlighted.
- Click on the Add button.
- A window titled mIRC Add Server will pop up. Fill in the boxes
as follows. Note that the Group and Password boxes should
remain blank. Screen Shot
Description: NT Server
IRC Server: irc.blackcobalt.net
Port(s): 6667
- When finished, click on Add.
- The mIRC Options window should return. Configure this window
as follows:
Full Name: Whatever you want people to think
your full name is.
Email Address: Whatever you want people to think
your email address is.
Nickname: Your preferred nickname. Try not to
exceed 12 characters.
Alternative: Secondary nickname choice in case
your preferred nickname is already taken.
Screen Shot
- When finished, click on the + sign next to IRC on the
menu to the left of the window.
- Click on Perform
- Enter the following text into the text window that shows up:
/join #whitetower
Screen Shot
- Make sure the checkbox above the window is checked.
- When done, click on the Connect option on the menu to the left
of the screen. This should take you back to the window that you specified
your nickname in.
- Click on the button titled Connect to IRC Server
- After a moment of random dings and scrolling text, a window titled
mIRC Channels Folder should appear. Screen Shot
- On the bottom of this window is a checkbox that is already checked.
Go ahead and uncheck it, then close the window.
- Congratulations, the #whitetower chat screen should be sitting right
before your eyes. If it isn't, close mIRC and return to step 5 and start
over.
