LOL or ROFL or ROFLOL - laughing out loud, rolling on floor laughing (other variations include LMAO (laughing my *ss off), LMFAO (laughing my f***ing *ss off), etc.)
afk - away from keyboard - lets others know you're not paying attention
brb - be right back
bbiab - be back in a bit. Other variations: bbl (be back later); bbiam (be back in a minute); bbiaf (be back in a few); bbs (be back soon) etc.

AIM - America Online Instant Messenger (AOL Instant Messanger) a messaging program
MSN - Miscrosoft Network (another messaging program)

RP - Role Play. In any of its forms (email, chat room, boards, fic, whatever.)
MB - Message boards - those things you post on *also see the NWT abbreviations
ICMB - In Character Message Board - the main board for IC interaction in the White Tower
OOCMB - Out of Character Message Board - used for everything that isn't IC. Jokes, randomness, announcements, requests for help... anything that is OOC
Others you might see or might not: BTMB - Black Tower MB; WMB - Warder MB; NMB - novice MB... essentially, if it ends in "MB" it's one of the boards. We like to abbreviate things because we're lazy.
CR - chat room. Refers to the IRC channels #whitetower and #gholaminn
IC - in character. This is your character talking, not you.
OOC - Out of Character - this is you talking, not your character
TBCB or TBC - to be continued by, to be continued. only the person named is to continue the thread. no one else is supposed to reply to the post.
fic or fanfic - work of fiction, work of fiction written by a fan; using the world of another writer (like we do here with RJ)
thread - a string of message board posts in a single RP or on a single topic
post - a message put on a message board; to put a message on a board. A quality RP post has the following distinguishing features:
- An average wordcount of 200 original words. Words copied from a previous post, while acceptable within the post, do not count towards your post.
- Advances the thread in some way, either via action or conversation.
- Contains at least one sentance relating to something your character sees, hears, feels, tastes or smells.
- Contains some element of your character's thoughts or conversation or both.
- Follows all rules of RP.
- Has accurate spelling, grammar, and format.
TO - Tower Officers. Those friendly, helpful people who run this place and hold it together
NWT - Netland White Tower
BARP (or GARP, RARP, YARP, etc.) (Blue) Ajah Role Play. Again, we abbreviate, so this really gets to be alphabet soup. If it ends in "RP", it's a role play, and most likely a formal one.
PM - private message, a message board feature.
MoN (MoNster, doMoNatrix, etc) - Mistress of Novices
MoA - Master/Mistress of Arms
Informal RP - a thread on a message board. Generally involves 2-3 people.
Formal RP - a specific story with many participants and RP threads. Involves the use of a titled Message Board to keep the threads together.
(Formal) Class - a series of IC lessons taught on a titled message board. It involves multiple threads, like a formal RP. A Formal Class has
one teacher and a minimum of 5 students. A Certificate of Completion is posted by the teacher when the class is finished; it lists the names of those who
successfully complete the class and may request their earned points.
Not Studied - the default level of skill. This is the level at which someone operates who a)has not been taught b)does not have an innate ability. For example: Randland is awash in books and the general
population is literate and fond of reading. Therefore "Not Studied" is the level of basic literacy.
Beginning Study - a low level of skill. This level indicates someone who is more familiar with the skill than the average person, but does not yet have full control of the ability or total knowledge of it.
Third Rank Average - a moderate level of skill. This is where most top-level characters who use a given skill will fall. Example Aes Sedai and Asha'man Channlling Ability minimums put them at this level.
Strong Among Peers - a high level of skill. People with skills at this level are generally in the Third Rank, and have greater ability with the skill than the "average" character at that rank.
Mastery - a very high level of skill. Skills at this level are understood to be completely learned. Channelling at this strength is very powerful.
Spork - a bot maintained by our local irc guru. It's a lot of fun. You'll get used to him.
Randstuff - the stuff spork 'says'. Also, as a verb, when something you say gets added to the database. Ie - "I've been randstuffed!"
UTFH - up the f*ing hill - the person is going to the bathroom (comes from a social...that's where the bathroom was located)
Channel - each chat 'room' has a name. #whitetower is a channel. #gholaminn is a channel. Etc.
Main channel - #whitetower; the OOC channel

AS - Aes Sedai
AsiT - Aes Sedai in Training (ie, Novices and Accepted)
WiT - Warder in Training (ie, at NWT, Siswai and Manshima. No, those ranks did not exist in the books)

WoT - Wheel of Time. Also becomes various adjectives and adverbs, such as "WOTly, WoTish, etc, referring to things which are somehow related to WoT
